The defining trait of a narcissist is an inflated sense of self importance and a deep need for the admiration of others. While we all experience these feelings from time to time, this is part of their core personality. Experts estimate that 15% to 20% of the population falls into a narcissistic personality type, but only 1% is officially diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).
There are different types of narcissists with their own unique traits. There are grandiose narcissists, who are charismatic and traditionally successful. Vulnerable narcissists have a victimization mindset and are often sullen and believe they are entitled to reparations. Malignant narcissists are the most difficult type to live with, due to being manipulative and vengeful. Communal narcissists do good deeds for the sake of praise, not out of kindness. Dark empaths are able to blend in more with the general population, due to their above-average emotional intelligence.
