David Silverman: Should All Employees Act Like Owners?

by Jarie Bolander on December 4, 2009

This post intrigued me because it details a dilemma. The dilemma is the fine line between a democratic company and an autocratic one. Most will agree that getting employee feedback is important, acting on that feedback responsibility makes sense and involving employees in certain decisions makes sense.

I draw the line on being overly democratic to the point where all decisions are based on the a majority vote. Management needs to make more of the decisions than the workers. It’s clear that this method allows managers to focus on the broader picture that most employees won’t be privy too. Management is a profession about making decisions — not all jobs are like that.
