I Hate People: Hating Email

by Jarie Bolander on October 29, 2009

Email is my nemesis. I try to ignore it but I am so trained to react to it that it saps my productivity. I am getting better thanks to InBox Zero, Zen Habits and I Hate People but I am not fully cured.

The latest post at I Hate People is about a book that is long over due: The Tyranny of E-mail. For me, this whole email thing is really an excuse to put off interacting in person or on the phone. I know, it’s bad but it’s true. It’s not that I don’t like to talk live it’s just the demands of the day make it impossible to get anything done if I did that.

Maybe someone will take up Jonathan’s challenge:

“Here’s my simple request: Will some genius please reinvent the personal note for the digital age? Find a brilliant way to mark or dignify a message so it isn’t viewed as one more jumble of bits and bytes cluttering our day?”

I certainly hope so

“Will some genius please reinvent the personal note for the digital age”

Isn’t that what a text message is?

Chris-
Good point. Text messages are a good way to do that but I think it’s the interface that is lacking (e.g. too hard to interact). Email’s nice but the noise level is huge. Maybe a Text Message/Twitter/Email Mash up.
